EDE TERÉNYI : KALEVALA
MONOOPERA
PERFORMED BY CARMEN VASILE
“The truth is that Kalevala is a magic song, an incantation! Every line of this work radiates belief: belief in the magical power of the word. The word changes everything. Inanimate objects become alive, from every corner living creatures awaken and populate themost deserted lands. The forest, Tapiola is the home of a thousand creatures. There is order inside. The world beyond – Tuonela is also full of life, great forces are at work there, they are devastating for men but in their own reality, at their own place they are organized into an order. Pohjola’s cold and frosty, northern world is also – as a counterpoint to Kalevala’s rich, productive, nourishing land – shaped after the human world. Besides them the world of plants and stars are also populated withmillion forms of life similar to the lives of humans. Only northernman is capable of believing in life in suchmiraculous ways, only he can find joy in it and appreciate its givens.” TERÉNYI EDE
„Kalevala is such a magic epode that is rerighting and get new meanings at every declamation, at every incantation. Like Ede Terényi’smusic, Kalevala ismuchmore that we can say, feel or understand; a long string of signs placed carefully here on earth for not forget the way to haven.” CARMEN VASILE

In his first works we notice the influence of the hungarian folklore from Transylvania and his superior form of expression form Bartok’s music. Then, in the ‘60s, Ede Terényi founds himself a personal musical language characterized by the transfiguration of the Bartok elements and the Webern serial music in a vision in which the mark of the autochthonous folklore stays clearly perceptible.
