ZSOLT LÁSZLÓFFY’s evening
His music, being up to date, relies on contemporary tendencies but itmay not be listed under either of them. His compositions structured rigorously have the taste of philosophical poetry – however being philosophical is a not euphemistic term for being dry. Zsolt Lászlóffy orchestrates his compositions based on atmospheres, the colorful world of hismusic is attractive. Voices of the past two decades also infiltrate Lászlóffy’s compositions: Assonances (Asszonáncok, 1995) for two pianos reflect the influence of minimal art,Concerto angelico (1994) having a peculiar set of instruments at work – two doublebass or two cellos and a piano – invite the composer to the postmodernworld by concrete quotes and by stylistic citations.TrioSonata for theMemory of Johann Sebastian Bach, composed a year later is similar to this previous composition in a way but also different – it is composed for the baroque ensemble of flute, chemballo and gamba, basing on thema play of dissonance in the neoclassical style to play tribute to the age or if we like, to provide a caricature of the act of tribute. The vocalmusic by Zsolt Lászlóffy is also worthy of our attention. The poemby his uncle (Tibetean Cantata) inspired one of Zsolt Lászlóffy’s most visioned work entitled In memoriam Kõrösi Csoma Sándor (1992), a cantata. Its voices, but its string quartet accompaniment is built up in a simple, puritan way, it is still very impressive and effective. Just as the composer himself, Zsolt Lászlóffy works: withdrawn, modest however still impressive.” Hollós Máté, 2000
